DIY Wedding Cakes

January 4, 2011

On a budget, just got back from the baker and they want $600 $800 or $2000 for that 4 tier cake.

Here is your do it yourself instruction to save $100’s

1.Bake your cakes, don’t forget to make them in different sizes the largest cake is approx. 14” on a 4 tier cake, then a 12”, 10” and a 8” cake.
2.Add  you’r  filling to the cake. Add that extra touch to your cake by adding cherry filling and any flavour filling.
3.Purchase a small package of butter cream  icing or make it yourself. You can get recipes of the internet. Spread a small layer on your cake very thin.
3.Purchase Fondant (available rolled or in buckets where you can roll it out)
4.Fondant is a edible topping on your cake to make it look smooth and flat. Fondant is available in c many colours. Fondant is more popular then royal icing which most cakes are made in bakeries due to nut allergies and Almond meal is used in common icings. The butter cream icing you added will help to cement the fondant on the cake.
5.Add your personal touches. Need flowers and decorations look at gumpaste flowers.  Gumpaste is used to make decorations on cake and some are edible. Artificial flowers will aslo work.
6.You can find gumpaste flowers at some online cake supply shops.
7.Gumpaste is not sold in stores and hard to find in bake shops as they make their money on decorating the cakes.
8.Having a wedding in the middle of summer. Gumpaste will not melt away like icing. How many times have you been at a wedding and the cake starts to tip or melt.
9.Hope this was useful in making your cake.
Good luck and Enjoy
